When returning to Home Depot to purchase a microwave that I had researched there about 10 days earlier I was told that there is a $60 delivery fee. I told the associate that I did not need to have the product delivered, I wanted to take it with me.

I was then told that they only stock one brand (house brand) of microwave, all others are mandatory delivery. I asked the associate to show me where on the price tag the $60 delivery fee is listed; it was not listed at all. I was told that there is signage at Home Depot which addresses delivery. Well, there are signs that offer delivery, but none that say it is mandatory.

Also, the department manager said that the "item code" is an online code and that should have been my indication that I couldn't get it in the store. I then asked him if he expects his customers to be familiar with their coding system to know an online only code from a store code, his reply was "No". Bottom line, it was impossible for me to purchase the microwave that I chose, for the price that was listed. This is false advertising.

Further, when I pressed the manager about it, his ridiculous solution was for me to wait until the sale was over and the price of the microwave goes up to buy it, because once the price exceeds a certain threshold, the delivery becomes free. So that means that the so-called mandatory delivery fee is completely arbitrary, and a way for HD to advertise a low price for a product while still making the money that they wanted for that product.

Bait and switch practices and false advertising. Isn't this illegal?

Reason of review: False Advertising, poor service.

Preferred solution: Address your false advertising practices, and list a legitimate price for your products so that consumers can make an informed choice. Get rid of sarcastic, unhelpful staff..

Home Depot Cons: False advertising, Sarcastic, Unhelpful staff, Bait and switch.

Location: Canton, Michigan

There's no bait & switch here. Home Depot website clearly delineates which items are available in stores (as well as which stores, and how many they have) and which ones are available online.

You walked into a store to buy something available online only. It's painfully obvious on the website whether something is available in a specific store, apparently you just didn't bother looking.
