I was under the impression that if you brought your measurements, HD would help you plan, buy, and install a kitchen.

This, apparently, is not the case. We brought a floor plan with measurements to HD and the kitchen people were excited about turning our 125 year old apt building back to a single family home. (We are planning to start the remodel in about 10 months.)

However, 1 month later and we still hadn't heard from them...My husband called the kitchen dept and they said they would have to come to the house to do the measurements. My husband explained that we currently have tenants in the area that will be the kitchen and we'd like to work off of the floorplan blueprint to come up with an estimate for our "dream kitchen".

The woman at the HD said she could not be of any help.

We also had almost exactly this same experience at Lowe's. The Lowe's woman was a bit more rude and said she "had to tend to people looking to do their kitchens NOW and had the money, etc. NOW."

My husband tried to keep the connection with HD saying, "I think it'd be a good idea to forge a relationship with someone so when they're ready to buy, they'll come to your store."

Apparently both HD and Lowe's aren't interested in customer relationships.

Is this a singular case of discrimination or have experienced something similar?

FYI..... most designer's at the Home Depot probably make a larger paycheck then you'd think.

Secondly, processes and proceedures are created because of past experiences. If you want to go to someone local, especially in this time in the economy, it is very likely within the first few years, if not even months they may be long gone, and if you do have an issue (AND THERE ARE ISSUES IN REMODELING AND CONSTRUCTION!) where will they be? Home Depot has a lot of resources behind them to make sure issues are handeled. ALSO, MANY MANY MANY designers that work for Home Depot have tons of experience and have NKBA (National Kitchen and Bath Association) certifications and you can find the ones that do at www.nkba.org Do you research.

Get recommendations from people you know, and ask the designers if they have photos of jobs THEY HAVE DONE that they can show you. Be smart about the process, listen to the people that know what they're doing. AND IF YOU'RE NOT WILLING TO PAY A MEASURE FEE OF $100 WHY SHOULD ANYONE WASTE THEIR TIME DESIGNING FOR YOU???? Also, remember, they don't give out measurments until you purchase.

So, if you want a designer, soley to design; HIRE ONE! They will charge you several hundred dollars to do the same work, and then you can take it to shop around, but 9 times out of 10, they are going to design for you in customer cabinets, and you don't get nearly the finish quaility or warranty like you do with semi-custom modular cabinets like Thomasville Cabinetry.

The designers shouldn't be designing a kitchen for anyone without the measuring company going out to take the measurements. It takes alot of time to do a design and if your not willing to have HD/Lowes do a measure they will not be willing to do the design. too many problems working from prints or measurements supplied by other people.

TJ Kmetz.. i agree with Josh Hargett...

go **** yourself. Understand that the first thing a consumer will do is push to have it there way, and when it doesnt work, complain complain complain. If you want a job well done.. TAKE THE RIGHT STEPS.

whats wrong with THD covering their behind from comsumers like you? :x

As working for Lowes I can see your frustration. Alot of people come in with thier own measurements and want things ordered and installed.

Thats not the case for Lowes for the kitchen cabinets it a $75 dollar fee that the installer goes and measures the area. this is so if something is wrong its the installers and our fault not yours because if it was yours than you would eat the loss not us.

don't waste your time at the hd company

Wow wish there was a place to complain about responses here that are rude and ignorant. What you have advised the poster is correct - had the people at home depot explained this to them clearly I am sure they would have understand. Try to think about the last time you asked someone else to clairfy something for you that you didn't know about to them you were probably an *** as well-but I hope they had more grace when they explained it to you then you have shown others.

No I think you should find someone local to do your kitchen. That way when they start work they can rip everything apart, leave it and never come back.

If your lucky they'll complete it and 6 months later it will fall apart and they won't do anything. Home Depot does only quality work and backs it with a labor guarantee on top of the manufacturer warranty. That's why they won't do much off an amateur's measurements.

It would never work and would waste everyone's time including your's. Think about it next time.

do you feel better now?

Are you completely dumb? Blueprints are for planning, but do not give the exact exact measurements anyone would need to design a kitchen for you.

They don't show how your house has settled over time. They do not show the trimwork and moulding around your doors and windows.

You would be wasting everyone's time going by these, not to mention, $$ for ordering cabintes that would surely not fit. Get a clue before complaing about stuff you are ignorant on...this website is for real complaints, not uninformed ones.

Do you really think some $10/hr. mo-tard working for Home Depot is going to have the ability to design a kitchen?

Do yourself a favor...stop being a cheapwad, get some references, and hire a local kitchen contractor, or learn to DIY. Sheesh...
